The environmental management system can be certified for compliance with the requirements of ISO 14001. The objective of ISO 14001 is to support environmental protection and prevent pollution while maintaining balance with the organization’s interests. The ISO 14001 standard neither offers specific technological approaches and methods for managing environmental impact, nor suggests specific environmental indicators, but it gives general requirements for the environmental management system. The new version of the ISO 14001 was released in 2004, and the latest one appeared in 2015. The first version of the international standard ISO 14001 was published in 1996. In 1992 the British Standards Institution suggested to use national environmental management standard BS 7750 as the basis for developing of an international standard. From the 1970s, all over the world a particular attention was paid to the impact of society on the environment. The implementation of the ISO 9000 series of standards, describing the model of quality management system, made it clear that the PDCA (Plan ‐ Do ‐ Check ‐ Act) cycle could be applied to environmental management systems.
